Mobile Nations podcasting update: What's new for 2013!

Mobile Nations podcast update: What's new for 2013!

Hey everyone! It's time for a mighty Mobile Nations podcast network update, and a peak at some really cool stuff we have planned for 2013! First of all, we have all-new album art for the shows. The original concept was created by superstar designer Marc Edwards of Bjango to be crisp, clean, and modern. It's tough to make a whole catalog of shows consistent yet retain all their individual personalities. With Marc's help, I think we've nailed it. And by popular demand, we've even added a small TV logo to the bottom of all the video podcast album art so you can distinguish them from their audio counterparts at a glance. We absolutely love them, and we hope you do too. (And yes, we'll be making all of them available as HiDPI/Retina wallpaper for your phones and tablets later this week!)

If you haven't recently, please make sure you leave a review and rating for your favorite Mobile Nations shows, where ever and when ever you can. It encourages services (like iTunes) to feature us, that helps us get more great listeners and viewers like you, and we appreciate it a lot!

Now on with the shows!

Android Central podcast

Android Central remains the biggest, baddest podcast in the Google-space, and we're not slowing down with it any time soon. Our next project with Phil, Jerry, Alex and team is to try and integrate Google+ Hangouts into the live broadcasts. You've been asking about it and we want to do it. Neither Hangouts nor our switcher software is all the way there yet, and we want to make sure we keep at least 720p for the recordings, so there some challenges to overcome still, but we're working on it. We'll update you as soon as we know more!

CrackBerry podcast

BlackBerry is back, baby! And with it, the CrackBerry Podcast is back! I know in the past the CBCast has been more special event than regularly scheduled event, but with BlackBerry 10 released, the BlackBerry Z10 on the market, and the BlackBerry Q10 and more to come, Kevin, Adam, Bla1ze and the gang have never been more exited. Besides, I've told Kevin that if he doesn't podcast at least one or twice a month from now on, he doesn't get any Burger King. So you know it's on.

iMore show

We've been mixing it up on the iMore show a lot lately. With our previous cast busy with their real lives and my joining MacBreek Weekly, it's caused some changes. I've done a few solo shows, but also had on an amazing array of guests, including Clayton Morris of Fox, Ryan Block of GDGT and Engadget, MG Siegler of parislemon and TechCrunch, Jim Dalrymple of the Loop, Arnold Kim of MacRumors, and more. We're going to be doing something else interesting soon, so stay tuned!

Windows Phone Central podcast

With the launch of Windows Phone 8 and the Surface, there's been an explosion of Microsoft mobile news of late, and Daniel and Jay have been bringing us absolutely all of it. With great sources and even better insight, they've been breaking down what devices are coming, which carriers they're going on, and which apps you absolutely need to check out.

Mobile Nations podcast

We've all been traveling a lot, and at different times, so it's been tough getting everyone together for a Mobile Nations Podcast, where Kevin, Phil, Daniel, Derek, and I talk about the bigger picture stuff, trends in mobile, and what they mean for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, webOS, and iOS. We're going to do our best to knock out at least one show a month though, and we expect you to yell at us any and every time it even looks like we're slowing down.

Ad hoc

Ad hoc is our newest show, and also our most diverse. Basically, Guy and a bunch of us geeks -- the group always varies -- were arguing about something on the Internet, and then realized it would work much better as a podcast. The topics will vary, but always be about our favorite stuff. The first one was on the future of Star Wars post-Disney acquisition, the second on the new James Bond movie, Skyfall. The next one is going to be on the Batman.

Debug

Debug is our development show, where Guy English and I pour some virtual drinks and chat with the people who code the apps and games we love. We've had on the people responsible for Letterpress, Kaleidoscope, 1Password, Twitterrific, Tweetbot, Hundreds, the Zephyr jailbreak, and -- oh, yeah -- Karateka and Prince of Persia! And we've got a ton more to come!

RSS | iTunes | Episode list

Iterate

Iterate is our design show, where Marc Edwards, Seth Clifford, and I talk to the people responsible for the look and feel of our favorite apps and games. We've been doing quite a few roundtables lately, including the realities of trying sell apps, skeuomorphism vs. digitally authentic design, along with interviews with everyone from the Iconfactory, to the New York Times, to Carbon, to DoubleTwist. And lots more to come!

ZEN & TECH

If you hadn't noticed, all the previous shows were about stuff -- using and making it. ZEN & TECH is about you, and the quality of your life. The last few shows have been all about Fitness Month, exercise, nutrition, and sleep, but Georgia and I are also in the middle of a series on parenting in the digital age, as well as continuing our weekly episodes on everything from de-cluttering to coping with family, sex to handling stress. You're the most important gadget you'll ever own, and we want to help you take care of yourself.

RSS Audio | RSS Video | iTunes Audio | iTunes Video | Episode list

Phew!

We're thrilled with the reaction we've been getting to all the shows over the last few months. We've invested a lot of money in equipment and services to try and make the best shows we can, and while we still have a long, long way to go, we're definitely making some progress! Downloads are way up, and the video shows in particular have been through the roof lately (sometimes beating the audio shows in terms of downloads!)

And as always, we're still only just getting started!

Stocks rally to close near session highs

Stocks finished near session highs Friday, recovering from a two-day slump, lifted by upbeat economic data from Europe and after comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard that the central bank's aggressive easy money policy will stay for a "long time."

The Dow eked out a slim weekly gain, avoiding its third-consecutive weekly decline. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 posted its first weekly loss this year, snapping its seven-week win streak.

"We're seeing some signs that the weekend anxiety is not that heavy," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "We have the Italian election coming up [this weekend] and a sign that I look at is the U.S. dollar?it was higher this morning on some anxiety and there was a bit of a flight to safety in Treasurys, but that's abating and that's telling me that [the market's] not too concerned about the weekend so that's why we're having a good rally."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied more than 100 points, led by Hewlett-Packard and Home Depot, while UnitedHealth dragged. Interestingly, the blue-chip index has so far posted a gain every Friday of this year, matching the Friday win streak from July through September of 2012.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also finished near session highs. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 15.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by materials and techs.

Meanwhile, traders said leaked reports that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been downplaying worries that quantitative easing has spawned asset bubbles also helped lift markets.

Bernanke is scheduled to testify before lawmakers next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said the Fed remained committed to aggressive easing measures in the form of its $85 billion a month bond-buying program.

"It's true that the committee is thinking about how are we going to handle this later this year, but that's a natural thing for the committee to be talking about," Bullard told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Fed policy is very easy and it's going stay easy for a long time."

Uncertainty about the future of the central bank's bond buying program weighed on the stock market in the last two days.

Minutes from the Fed's meeting in January, released on Wednesday, showed policymakers were growing concerned about the impact of quantitative easing, suggesting the central bank may taper off its $85 billion per month purchasesearlier than expected.

Among earnings, Abercrombie & Fitch posted earnings that easily beat expectations, while revenue fell slightly short of estimates and the company handed in full-year 2013 earnings guidance that missed expectations. Meanwhile, the firm increased its quarterly dividend to 20 cents a share from 17.5 cents a share. Shares tumbled to lead the S&P 500 laggards.

Hewlett-Packard soared to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the computer hardware giant easily topped Wall Street expectations and handed in current-quarter and full-year earnings guidance that topped forecasts. At least three brokerages lifted their price target on the company.

Texas Instruments jumped to lead the Nasdaq 100 gainers after the chipmaker raised its dividend by 33 percent and boosted its stock buyback program.

Darden warned it expects to see third-quarter earnings of between $1 a share and $1.02 a share, against current Wall Street expectations for $1.12 a share, hurt by economic headwinds, including rising gas prices and higher payroll taxes.

European shares ended broadly higherfollowing positive economic news from Germany and ahead of Italy's general election this weekend.

German business sentiment jumped at its fastest rate since July 2010 in February, suggesting the country is rebounding after its weak fourth quarter.

U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Washington. Abe is expected to seek support for the hyper-easy monetary policies he has instigated to revive Japan's ailing economy.

NASA's Basement Nuclear Reactor

Good luck with recycling that, where I live it's hard enough to get rid of used auto oil at the local dump (municipal recycling facility).

And if it's like any other "white goods" it's going to be upgraded, have parts replaced, newer model put in.

? Going to love what happens when your old nuclear powerplant goes past its warranty date and you want some new hoses, want to chuck out the old model for a bigger model etc. How does that work for the local recycling facilities? or if you want to knock down an old house and level the ground so you've got to dump an old nuclear reactor somewhere?

I'm sure there's a simple answer, please enlighten me. Apparently some cities have mountains of discarded washing machines/fridges/other white goods, will we have the same of nuclear reactors?

Man dies from gunshot wound ... 36 years later

Johnson (ABC/News 10)

Police in Sacramento, Calif., are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who died from a shooting?36 years after it happened.

Walter Johnson Jr., who was left paralyzed from the 1977 attack, died from complications related to his paralysis, leading police to rule his death a homicide. They are asking the public for help in its investigation.

It's technically the fourth homicide in the California state capital this year.

According to a press release issued by the Sacramento Police Department, Johnson was driving to his parent's home on April 9, 1977, at approximately 3:48 a.m. when three unidentified men blocked the roadway. They confronted Johnson in his vehicle, and a struggle ensued. Johnson was shot in the upper body. The suspects then robbed Johnson and "fled in a red or brown Ford Pinto." The three suspects?described as Hispanic adults?were never apprehended.

Police are hoping that advances in technology, and perhaps even guilty consciences, may lead to a break in the cold case.

"Sometimes people ... want to talk about it over the years," SPD spokeswoman Michele Gigante told the Sacramento Press. "It's still up in the air at this point, but do I think we have a good chance of solving this? Sure."

Sacramento police are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

A burst of 9 links for you to chew over, as picked by the Technology team

Matt Drance:

People would have happily waited longer for a comprehensive, exciting product launch. It's been nearly seven years since the last PlayStation was revealed; would another month or two have tipped some scale??Whoever this was aimed at ? developers, hardcore gamers, casual gamers ? the utter lack of usable information makes the timing questionable at best.

There are also competitive repercussions: Sony has now shown its hand way ahead of time. Microsoft is not expected to announce its next-generation Xbox until E3 in June, leaving more than three months to respond accordingly. If Sony's offering ends up superior to the Xbox when that announcement happens, then Sony hasn't gained much, because we still don't know what it has or what it can do, and it'll be months-old news.?If Sony's offering ends up inferior, it will be upstaged and stale.

At 16:43 CET, this afternoon we noticed that the NBC.com website links to the redkit exploit kit that is spreading Citadel malware, targeting US financials?institutions. This version of Citadel is only?recognizable?by 3 out of the 46 antivirus programs on virustotal.com.

Simply everywhere. Commercial, not state-sponsored, hacking.

This is the hack of the iPhoneSDK site which also affected Facebook and Twitter:

Investigators suspect that the hackers are a criminal group based in Russia or Eastern Europe, and have tracked at least one server being used by the group to a hosting company in the Ukraine. Other evidence, including the malware used in the attack, also suggest it is the work of cyber criminals rather than state-sponsored espionage from China, two people familiar with the investigation said.

Our own Keith Stuart:

No one should have expected a price. Possibly we shouldn't have expected a launch date or an actual console either. This is the way Sony rolls.

Think back to 2005 if you can. The PS3 reveal. There was an event early in the year to announce the console, then another at E3 to actually provide lots of the intrinsic detail. The same thing happened with the PS2. And with the original machine, Sony's first press releases didn't even name it. So anyone who sat through last night's two-hour extravaganza thinking "hang on, what does it LOOK like?" just hasn't been to enough Sony hardware reveals.

Secretly? We were hoping for a price, console and date. Like the handset and tablet makers usually do. Because that's who Sony is up against now - make no mistake.

Sounds crazy, doesn't it? If you copy and paste text more than 20 times, your phone will restart! Some people have reported more severe crashes than that - but for me it is only (!) a soft restart. This affects the Galaxy Note II, as well as the SIII and Note tablet. Other Samsung products may also be broken in this manner?

You must be a...

Oh give it a rest! I'm an equal opportunity curmudgeon. I like Linux and generally favour Android, but I get pissed off at anyone who produces a shitty product and doesn't stand behind it.

Samsung - either up your game, or get off the pitch.

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a technique that uses an electronic interface to remotely control, or steer, cockroaches.

"Our aim was to determine whether we could create a wireless biological interface with cockroaches, which are robust and able to infiltrate small spaces," says Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work. "Ultimately, we think this will allow us to create a mobile web of smart sensors that uses cockroaches to collect and transmit information, such as finding survivors in a building that's been destroyed by an earthquake."

In February 2011, Anonymous gained access to the website rootkit.com - an online forum where hackers and researchers share information about hacking techniques - and published personal data of more than 40,000 registered users online. The data included email and IP addresses.

The breach was one of dozens by Anonymous over the past two years and gained relatively little media attention. But now, two years later, security researchers say the data was valuable in helping them find links between hackers and the Chinese military.

"We are fortunate to have access to the accounts disclosed from rootkit.com," the Mandiant report said.

Anonymous' disclosure of the rookit.com information included an email and IP address for the username "uglygorilla." The IP information, which identifies the location from which the user is accessing the Internet, pinned the hacker to a place close to a 12-story office tower in Shanghai that researchers believe is the headquarters of P.L.A. Unit 61398 -- cyber warriors for the Chinese military.

What's the phrase for collateral damage when it's collateral but isn't damage?

On ways to market.

Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley had initially called for BlackBerry to sell about 1.75m BlackBerry Z10 smartphones in the February quarter. But after his checks following the phone's launch in the UK and Canada found limited initial supply and softer than expected demand, the analyst slashed his estimates for the current quarter from 1.75m units to just 300,000?

"With new BB10 smartphones launching in the US only in mid-March or later at subsidized prices no better than competing high-end Apple/Samsung smartphones, combined with our expectations for the Galaxy S IV to launch at a similar time frame in the US market, we are lowering our BB10 sales estimates for the February quarter and all of [BlackBerry fiscal year] 2014."

BlackBerry's quarter ends at the end of February.

Panetta: Defense furloughs would be 'disruptive and damaging'

In a letter Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Congress there were no 'viable alternatives' to putting civilian defense employees on furlough should scheduled budget cuts take effect on March 1. President Obama spoke in favor of avoiding the cuts on local television around the country, Wednesday.?

Defense Secretary Leon?Panetta formally notified?Congress?on Wednesday that the?Pentagon?plans to put civilian defense employees on unpaid leave this year if $46 billion in across-the-board?U.S. government?spending cuts take effect on March 1.

The announcement of congressional notification begins a 45-day process that could ultimately lead to 22 days of unpaid leave for most of the department's 800,000 civilian employees around the globe.

In a letter released by?House of Representatives?Speaker?John Boehner, Panetta?said the furloughs would be "disruptive and damaging" to the?Pentagon's defense mission, but there were no "viable alternatives" to reduce spending if the budget cuts occur.

President?Barack Obama?has been sounding the alarm about the impact of the $85 billion in automatic across-the-board government spending cuts due to take effect starting next month. The president turned to local television stations across the country on Wednesday to increase public pressure on congressional Republicans to avert the cuts.

In addition, Secretary of State?John Kerry?defended U.S. foreign affairs spending against the backdrop of looming cuts, saying it protects U.S. security and creates jobs.

"Foreign assistance is not a giveaway. It's not charity. It is an investment in a strong?America?and in a free world," Kerry said at the?University of Virginia.

An administration official, who asked not to be named, said that even?White House?operations will be not spared under the cuts.

Pentagon?Comptroller?Robert Hale?said there would be "very limited exceptions" to the furloughs, including civilians in combat zones, foreign civilians at overseas bases, some police and healthcare workers and political appointees exempted by law.

Hale declined to estimate what percentage of the civilian workers were likely to be furloughed but said it would be more than half. Another defense official said, "we expect more than 80 percent to be furloughed."

The unpaid leave, which will essentially cut the pay of civilian employees by 20 percent, is expected to save up to $5 billion, one of many cuts required as the?Pentagon?tries to slash $46 billion in spending by the end of the year.

The across-the-board cuts, known as sequestration, are due to take effect on March 1 unless?Congress?decides to delay them. They were mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011 because lawmakers and the?White House?failed to reach a compromise on alternative spending reductions.

The?Defense Department, which had warned for weeks about the furlough plan, has imposed a hiring freeze on civilian personnel and ordered the termination of many of its 46,000 temporary and contract workers. Officials said about 6,000 had already been laid off, with more likely to come.

Baseball falls to Virginia Tech to close opening weekend

Virginia Tech?s weekend in the Port City will be the last time UNC Wilmington sees them this season?and the Seahawks likely won?t be missing them.

Sunday?s game against Virginia Tech ended a disappointing home stand against the Hokies, with the Seahawks dropping two games in as many days. The Seahawks (2-2) followed up Saturday?s 9-0 loss to Virginia Tech with a 7-2 loss to the Hokies on Sunday afternoon.

Virginia Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and had extended the lead to five before the Seahawks even got on base. UNCW head coach Mark Scalf expressed his frustrations over the slow start.

?We didn?t get off to a good start, from a defensive standpoint? We weren?t throwing as many strikes as we?d like.?

?In the first two innings alone, starting pitcher Blaze Tart gave up five hits in only 11 at-bats. Granted, this was the redshirt junior?s first action in nearly two years after missing all of last season because of arm surgery in mid-2011.

?I still went through the same routine I always go through,? Tart said. ?Game-wise, I just couldn?t throw strikes.?

Midway through the 2nd, Tart was called to the bullpen. Justin Livengood, a senior from Winston-Salem, came on in relief soon after and was one of four pitchers UNCW used throughout the game.?

Mark Zagunis, catcher for Virginia Tech, had an outstanding game for the Hokies, finishing with four hits, three RBIs, and one run, to follow up his two hits and one run against UNCW on Saturday.

The Seahawks? Luke Dunlap finished with one hit and one run.

Though disappointed with the loss, Scalf was optimistic about the future of his bullpen.

?We?re excited about our pitching staff. Livengood, Secrest, Monroe all had good command of the fastball,? he said.?

The Seahawks will look to bounce back Wednesday against Charleston Southern in their first road game of the season.

NOTES

Attendance at today?s game was listed at 1,002. Today?s game was the 20th game all time between the two teams, tying the series 10-10.

CBS quarterly profit rises on advertising, cable fees

(Reuters) - CBS Corp reported a higher profit for the fourth quarter on Thursday, boosted by political advertising at its flagship broadcast network and higher affiliate and subscription fees at cable channels.

Net earnings rose to $393 million, or 60 cents a share, from $370 million, or 55 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 2 percent to $3.61 billion.

On an adjusted basis, CBS reported earnings of $414 million, up from $377 million a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share reached 64 cents, the company said.

Content licensing and distribution revenue fell 7 percent from a year earlier, primarily due to the timing of payments for online streaming of CBS shows, the company said.

CBS also announced plans to repurchase an additional $1 billion of its Class B common stock in 2013, a near doubling of its earlier buyback commitment.

CBS shares fell 1.7 percent to $42.20 in after-hours trading, down from their close at $42.94 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Tentative Kansas seeding determined in NCAA Basketball Tournament mock selection exercise

Indianapolis ? In this room without windows in the NCAA offices we have taken a first crack at the top three seed lines.

No. 1 seeds: Indiana, Miami, Duke and Florida. No. 2 seeds: Michigan State, Michigan, Arizona (shockingly) and Gonzaga. No. 3 seeds: Syracuse, Butler, Kansas and Louisville.

Now the mock committee breaks for dinner for 35 minutes. (You mean those Reese's bars weren't supposed to be dinner? Uh-oh.)

Interestingly, conference affiliation is not allowed to be mentioned when discussing teams. For example, you can say Gonzaga defeated Oklahoma by 15, Kansas State by 16, Baylor by 7 and Oklahoma State by 1, but pointing out that the Zags are 4-0 against the Big 12 is forbidden.

A tweaking of the seeds could be necessary based on various rules, such as the one that prohibits conference foes from facing each other too early in the tournament.

FCC: 41 percent of Lifeline phone subsidies in 2012 weren't verified

FCC commissioners late 2012

The FCC took significant steps to cut the waste from its Lifeline phone subsidy program at the start of last year. However, it might not have gone far enough, if an FCC review of the program prompted by the Wall Street Journal is an indicator. Among the top five providers receiving money for telecom service to the poor in 2012, 41 percent of their customers either couldn't or didn't prove they were eligible. The lack of answers leaves a real possibility that some of the $2.2 billion spent on Lifeline in 2012 might have gone to those who didn't need it. In response, the FCC is keen to claim that its reforms may have saved $214 million last year, but it isn't happy that there may still have been money going down the tubes -- it's investigating the accusations and could levy fines of up to $1.5 million per violation. While only Verizon has gone on the record and says it's been dropping customers who wouldn't prove their eligibility, it's likely we'll know more about the potential excesses in the near future.

Pressure all on Mourinho ahead of Madrid-United

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:25 p.m. ET Feb. 12, 2013

MADRID (AP) -Outwitting Alex Ferguson has never been so important for Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho as he potentially puts his short- and long-term future on the line in the last-16 match against Manchester United in the Champions League.

With Madrid trailing Barcelona by 16 points in the Spanish league, the pressure is on Mourinho to deliver success in Europe and win the continent's most glittering prize for the club for the 10th time.

Widespread opinion in Spain suggests his job depends on it.

"Are you worried with my crisis? I am not," Mourinho said at a news conference Tuesday.

In another intriguing sub-plot surrounding arguably the most glamorous match in European football, the Portuguese coach may also see the game as an audition for his chances of replacing Ferguson at United when the 71-year-old Scot ends his long stint at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has lost just two of his 14 meetings with Ferguson down the years and has long been viewed as the favorite to succeed the man who has become a close friend. They will likely share a bottle of red wine after Wednesday's first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, and after the return leg on March 5.

Mourinho said Tuesday that he expects England to be the next destination in his coaching career, but added jokingly that it's unlikely he would be replacing Ferguson.

"I don't believe so," he said. "I think we have to end our career at the same time - him at 90 and me at 70."

"I will go back to England after Real Madrid," Mourinho added. "We will see (when that is). I love everything (about England). England will be my next step."

Ferguson is in no doubt about who is carrying the bigger expectations ahead of what Mourinho has dubbed "the match the world is waiting for."

"I think their target is the European Cup," Ferguson said. "They got a bad start in the league and were chasing their tail a bit because Barcelona's form has been incredible. I think Jose has set his targets firmly on the European Cup, no doubt about that.

"It can be harder for us but there's a bit of pressure for them, too. At this moment in time, we're involved in three (competitions)."

Ferguson has also been hyping up the match between clubs who have won the title 12 times between them.

"I think it is (the ultimate matchup), probably even more than a United-Barcelona game," Ferguson said. "United and Madrid have that romance about them and that honor and worldwide appeal so it probably is the biggest game you can get in the European Cup."

"It is unfortunate that we are meeting as early as this," Ferguson said Tuesday. "I wish it had been at Wembley (for the final on May 25)."

Adding further spice to the occasion is the presence of prolific Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who will face his old club for the first time since leaving United in 2009 for a world-record fee of 80 million pounds (now $124 million).

Ronaldo scored a hat trick in a weekend victory over Sevilla in the Spanish league, taking his tally of Madrid goals for 2013 to 13 already as he continues to smash the club's goalscoring records.

"I hope he keeps it up," Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said, "he is a unique player on our squad."

Madrid will be the slight favorite in the first leg, having won eight of their last nine home games in the Champions League.

"In my opinion, Real Madrid have a better team," Ronaldo told UEFA.com, "but we have to show that on the pitch because United are a very united team and always have been in recent years."

Mourinho rested midfielders Xabi Alonso, Mesut Oezil and Sami Khedira at the weekend, so they should return. United may focus on pressuring Alonso, the playmaker who so often releases Ronaldo for counterattacks.

Goalkeeper Iker Casillas is out with a broken hand so Diego Lopez will likely deputize.

Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes remains out for United with a knee problem, but winger Ashley Young and goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard are back in the squad after injuries. Both Phil Jones and Jonny Evans were on the flight to Madrid on Tuesday after recovering from knocks picked up in the 2-0 win over Everton in the English Premier League on Sunday.

Ferguson is likely to recall center back Rio Ferdinand and midfielder Michael Carrick after they were rested against Everton. Ferguson usually adopts a 4-5-1 formation in big matches away from home, so England striker Wayne Rooney could therefore end up playing on the left wing.

Ferguson believes his current team is better than the one that reached the Champions League final in 2011, where it lost to Barcelona 3-1.

"People say we are not as good as the teams of the past but sometimes people have foggy impressions, I do myself at times," he said Tuesday. "This team doesn't know when it is beaten. It has good individual players. But the acid test is tomorrow."

The New Cost of Dying in Ohio: Kasich's 20 Proposed ?Death Taxes?

In his first budget Governor Kasich killed Ohio?s Estate Tax which he said was driving wealthy Ohioans to Florida. ? ?The tax was applied to estates valued over $338,000 ? only about 7% of those in Ohio. ? The bulk of the tax was paid to local governments and eliminating it removed $250 million a year from local coffers. ? The effect was felt throughout the state and impacted important public safety services like police?and fire.

The Estate Tax typically impacted well-off individuals with high-value estates but this year?Kasich plans to?institute a whole series of new ?service? taxes that will?hit everyone and will have a much bigger impact of those with lower incomes.

One new tax that stood out was for funeral services.

Unlike movies or bowling, which will also be taxed under the new plan, paying for a funeral is generally not a choice. ?And the costs will hit families of all income levels already dealing with the emotional and financial?struggles?of losing a family member. ? ?A host of other related services will also be taxed under Kasich?s plan?

?

Did your loved one leave you with a house?
Property sales agents and real estate title abstract services are now taxed.

Was the home full of personal items?
Packing and crating and intrastate courier service are now taxed.

Did your loved one leave you to handle his/her estate and finances?
Accounting, Bookkeeping,Tax return preparation, Legal services, Insurance services, Investment counseling, Loan broker fees and service charges of banking institutions are now all taxable.

Need your suit cleaned for the funeral?
Laundry and dry cleaning services

Or your hair cut?
Cutting, coloring, styling of hair

Traveling to the funeral?
Travel agent services?are now taxed and you?ll be taxed when you park your car at the airport.

Want to run an obituary in the paper?
Sales of advertising time or space are now taxed.

Kasich?s 2013 budget was most certainly written with an eye to the 2014 election, with the Governor hoping to cast himself as the guy who cut Ohio?s income tax. ? But choosing to greatly expand Ohio?s sales tax to offset the costs could backfire. ?Instead of closing tax loop holes, which impact only a few individuals or businesses, Kasich chose to enact a tax increase on every Ohioan who sees a movie and every Ohio small business that uses a lawyer and an account.

The impact of Kasich?s sales tax increase is broad and will be felt across the state by most Ohioans. ? His income tax cut, on the other hand, will have its largest impact on a much smaller group of wealthy Ohioans.

IF he?s lucky, Kasich might be able to sell this idea to his own people in the Republican-controlled legislature and actually get the tax plan passed.

But selling Ohioans on the idea that Kasich is a tax-cutter when they find themselves paying new taxes on everything from haircuts to cable TV to funeral services might be a more difficult sell.

Crist should take note of Lawson?s clout with Democratic base, GOP lawmakers

Former Gov. Charlie Crist, a new member of the Democratic Party, had a strong showing in the latest Public Policy Polling (PPP) report on Florida. PPP?s January 16th poll found that 70 percent of Democrats in the state view him favorably. He would also beat incumbent Gov. Rick Scott 53 to 39 percent in an election matchup. ?
But Crist might face opposition in the 2014 Democratic gubernatorial primary. Some members of the state party are attempting to recruit former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz to challenge Crist for the nomination.

If Crist wins a divisive primary contest, he will need a running mate who can energize the Democratic base. He will also need someone who can work across party lines in order to push legislation through the Republican-controlled legislature.

FAMU alumnus Alfred ?Al? Lawson could rally swing voters in the majority white Florida Senate district he represented from 2000 to 2010. A Crist-Lawson ticket would also excite African American voters. Crist won 20 percent of black votes when he ran for the governorship back in 2006.

Lawson can get things done at the Florida Capitol. A recent news article published by the Florida Current shows that Lawson still has tremendous clout with his former colleagues in the Republican-dominated Florida Senate. ?Although we were of different parties, Al Lawson was always highly regarded by the Republicans,? Florida Senate President Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, told reporter Bill Cotterell.

Lawson formerly served as the Minority Leader of the Florida Senate. He could guide the process helping Crist?s appointees to the executive agencies and the Florida Supreme Court secure confirmation. He could also find sponsors for bills that represent the priorities of the governor?s office.

Right now, Lawson is mulling a bid for the FAMU presidency. But the process of pursuing the position could be filled with complications. Cotterell noted that: ?[Al Lawson?s] brother Kelvin Lawson is on the FAMU board and his wife, Delores Lawson, is an assistant dean of nursing at the university.?

Whether or not Lawson throws his hat into the ring to lead FAMU, his name should become part of Crist?s shortlist for the lieutenant governorship. That position would enable him to use his political connections to help FAMU, the Big Bend, Democratic Party, and entire state of Florida.

Celtics outlast Nuggets in 3 OTs with 118-114 win

BOSTON (AP) ? Paul Pierce had 27 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists and the Boston Celtics extended their winning streak to seven games with a 118-114 triple overtime victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Boston's win also ended Denver's winning streak at nine games.

Pierce made a tying 3-pointer in the second overtime to make it 107-107 and extend the game.

Kevin Garnett had 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds while Jason Terry scored a season-high 26 points off the bench.

The Celtics also stayed unbeaten since point guard Rajon Rondo's season-ending knee injury.

Terry hit a 3-pointer with 1:33 remaining in the third overtime to put the Celtics ahead 116-113.

Danilo Gallinari, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, hit a free throw, but Denver would not get any closer.

Terry, who had missed five consecutive 3-point shots in the first two overtimes, also made the defensive play of the game when he stole the ball from Andre Miller with 35 seconds remaining.

Denver had one last gasp as Miller missed a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaining before Terry dribbled the ball up the court and made a layup at the buzzer to finish the scoring.

Denver's Ty Lawson had 29 points, nine assists and six rebounds and hit several key shots, including a running bank shot to send the game into overtime tied at 92-92.

Gallinari struggled from the field as he shot 7 of 20 from the field for the Nuggets. Kenneth Faried had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Denver.

Garnett was 3 of 4 from the field in overtime after missing 14 of his previous 20 shots.

With Denver leading 105-104 in the second overtime, Lawson hit another jumper to put the Nuggets up 107-104 with 18.9 seconds remaining.

But Pierce hit a 3-pointer with Miller in his face with 5 seconds left to tie the game at 107-107.

Gallinari then had an open lane to the basket as he was overplayed by Garnett, but missed his shot as time ran out.

Jeff Green's 3-pointer tied the game at 99-99 with 23.8 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but Lawson's long 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer.

Denver failed to hit its last shot in all three overtimes with chances to win the game in the first two and to tie it in the third.

Green's jumper put Boston ahead 92-90 with 47.9 seconds remaining in regulation. Miller then missed consecutive shots on the ensuing Denver possessions, but Faried was fouled with 5.4 seconds remaining.

Faried missed both free throws, but Celtics guard Avery Bradley knocked the ball out of bounds. Lawson then scored with 0.8 seconds remaining.

Gallinari, who averages 20 points per game to lead Denver, was held to three points in the first half on 1-of-6 shooting as the Nuggets trailed 50-46 at the break.

Notes: Boston is 13-2 in its past 15 home games against Denver, but the teams are 10-10 head-to-head in the past 20. ... Boston matches up again on the road with Denver on Feb. 19. ... This had been the Nuggets' longest winning streak since March 30 to April 15, 2005. ... Andre Iguodala left the game for Denver in the third quarter with a strain and did not return.

?Ice, slush and all kinds of yuck?

As snow blankets the northeastern United States, snarls traffic and shoves residents indoors, Yahoo News readers are sharing their storm experiences. Here are dispatches, photos and videos they shared this morning. Interested in contributing? Learn more. (All times on posts are ET.)

5:32 p.m.

Blizzard knocking at the door

BUCKSPORT, Maine?Snow began falling early morning in mid-coastal Maine. The temperatures were frigid outside and down to around 5 degrees. Winds were whipping, and the roads had just started to disappear with a blanket of about two inches of snow on the ground. Our town's road crew had its plows on and was already out clearing the roads locally. I am sure these few inches that had begun to fall were an instant reminder that the blizzard was just knocking at our door.

We left our house early, so we fared well at the gas pumps with only a few others taking their turn getting gas. We took our gas cans as we would need the gas for the generator if we have power outages. We got enough extra for our snow blower that undoubtedly will get a good work out. We stopped at the grocery store on the way home, so that I could get all the essentials we need, e.g., batteries, water, milk, eggs, coffee, oh-- and chocolate! The parking lot was full, and we barely had a place to park -- but I got in and out with no major issues with everything I needed to weather the storm.

? Virginia Wright

4:53 p.m.

Fun, not fretting, in Maine's blizzard

READFIELD, Maine? The day before a storm of any size, our area the grocery stores and gas stations get overrun with customers. Everyone trying to not only stock up on food and necessities for the possible three days of not wanting to be on the roads, but also collecting water, batteries and something for heat just in case we spend a week or so without power.

It is like a game to most of us. We all sit around trying to guess as to how many inches of snow we will end up getting and how many days we will go without power if at all. I personally love the feeling of being surrounded by snow and to be able to sit in my living room and just watch the beauty happen around me.

Oh, the work? You want to know about the work side of it? Well, with each storm, there does come a lot of responsibility, but, hey, we are Mainers. We can handle it. Have your shovels handy and your plow on and you will be fine. Make it fun. There is no need to be stressed out.

? Angela Godbout

4:40 p.m.

Bitten by Sandy, taking this storm seriously

STAMFORD, Conn.?Storm-weary residents here, once bitten by Sandy, are preparing for the worst. Store shelves were empty and lines at gas stations resulted in wait times of as long as 30 minutes last night, as residents prepared to be trapped inside their homes. Water, road salt, and shovels were in short supply. Optimistically, plastic sleds were also sold out.

The snow fall is alternating between heavy and light. It seems to fall at inches per hour, only to change to very light flakes. It's a heavy, wet, sticky snow on the ground, making shoveling a back-breaker. There's no significant wind to speak of and, thus far, no significant damage, injuries, or power outages reported.

The blizzard will continue throughout the day and into Saturday, with the heaviest snowfall expect in the evening. Connecticut's Gov. Dan Malloy is declaring a state of emergency with road closures to begin at noon.

We have adequate supplies of staple foods, gas for the snow-blower, and flashlights and batteries. We checked our property for potential problems and found none (fortunately, no trees are within striking distance of our house). The storm is finding us well-prepared, well-stocked, and ready to spend a weekend indoors.

? David J. Kozlowski

3:24 p.m.

Tempers flares, shelves stripped in central Jersey as storm arrives

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J.?Starting Thursday, residents here began stocking up on food, batteries, snow shovels, and gasoline. Those lucky enough to have generators don't want to risk running out of gas, which may be as hard to find after this storm as it was after "Superstorm" Sandy.

Thousands of flights have been canceled at Newark and other New York-area airports. The parking lot at the local Stop & Shop was jammed, as people stripped shelves of milk, bread, and bottled water. Tempers frayed and a horn-blowing contest erupted over a parking space-- if the participants had not been senior citizens, fisticuffs would probably have taken place instead.

As of noon, the temperature is hovering around 30 degrees with a steady rain. The rain is expected to change to snow later this afternoon, with an accumulation of six to 12 inches forecast for central Jersey by the time the storm moves out.

? E. Burgin

2:19 p.m.

Near white-out conditions in central New Hampshire

TILTON, N.H.?Weather conditions are worsening rapidly in central New Hampshire, with highway visibility and road navigation a major problem even in the early a.m. commute. Thick cloud cover at this time just added to the low visibility.

The right lane on RT 93 in New Hampshire is relatively clear, as you can see in the video, but passing cars in the left lane make visibility close to zero. I commuted from Tilton to Plymouth, N.H., at 8 a.m., about 30 miles and although the RT 93 was not slick or slippery, drivers who chose to drive below 50 MPH seemed to compound the problem as other vehicles stacked up behind them, and ultimately passed them, creating a potential sliding and collision hazard.

The snow spray from the passing vehicles produced complete white-out conditions for the remaining vehicles when cars and trucks passed us.

Franconia Notch is a total white-out driving situation, as one Thornton driver reported after he turned back from his commute and returned home.

Expect back roads to be even worse than RT 93. Though the plows are out in full force, they cannot keep up with the high rate of snow falling at this time. State troopers can be seen parked along RT 93 and are closely monitoring the situation.

Main streets are already sloppy, and I was sliding down hilly side roads, or unable to drive up steep roads. I saw no accidents during this early morning commute, but I am sure that has changed by the time this is published. It was a very tense drive.

Staying at home is strongly suggested if at all possible.

The Blizzard of 2013, aka the Great Raid on Dunkin? Donuts

TORRINGTON, Conn.?I took the day off, as the predicted historic snowstorm approached in Connecticut. I decided to venture out this morning for some breakfast while the roads were still passable. My wife asked me to pick up some donuts while I was out, so I proceeded to the local grocery store where there is a Dunkin' Donuts.

To my dismay there wasn't a donut left on the shelf.

I figured I had to go to the main store where I was sure there would be some since it was only 10 a.m.

As I pulled up to the main Dunkin' Donuts store, I could see through the window that it was going to be slim pickings.

Nothing. Dunkin' Donuts does not have donuts!

I asked the girl behind the counter why a donut shop doesn't have donuts at 10 a.m. She told me that people were coming in and buying dozens of donuts at a time. Dozens of donuts? Is this some kind of an emergency staple I don't know about?

Already drawing comparisons to 1978

NEWPORT, R.I.?Here on the coast, we're preparing for what has the potential to be a storm as severe of the great blizzard of 1978. Almost 35 years ago to the day, that storm left massive amounts of snow on the entire northeastern United States.

Grocery stores and supermarkets were bombarded overnight with people preparing for a long freeze-out this weekend. Lines are winding around gas stations here as the storm approaches. A state of emergency was put in to place at noon, so it would be best to stay off the roads unless there is an emergency.

The state was prepared for this since last night. Classes were canceled at high schools across the state. All RIPTA buses, including the non-medical ride program, were canceled at noon on Friday in anticipation of the coming storm. People who require public transportation can follow them on Facebook and Twitter at @RIPTA_RI to stay up-to-date with when service will be restored. Residents can sign up for news updates, which will update them of service changes.

Storm increasing pace in southern Maine

BUCKSPORT, Maine?Somewhere around 7 a.m., it started to flurry fairly hard, and the storm steadily increased its pace. There is already a few inches of snow as of now (1 p.m.), and this is not even the actual storm. That is supposed to hit sometime early this evening and continue into tomorrow.

There?s a 19-car pile-up on I-295 in southern Maine, and there have been a number of sirens heard locally in town. If you don't need to go out, I would suggest not, and if you must, please take it slow and do it soon. From what we are being told, the worst is yet to come.

The flakes are starting to appear in Rhode Island

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.?The sky looks grey and menacing. I went to the supermarket Thursday morning (along with at least 100 other people who seemed to have the same idea) and made sure I had enough food. The woman in the checkout line before me said the parking lot was in chaos and everybody was acting like the end of the world was coming. I thought it was very funny, and also very accurate. Now I am warm and safe indoors, and there is nothing to do except wait.

There is a feeling of impending doom and my joints ache. I'm not looking forward to this, but I'm as prepared as I can get. I don't drive due to a medical condition, and ironically I have often found that it is actually faster for me to walk right after a snowstorm, since I can be downtown in 15 minutes.

That advantage goes away after the first day or so because they don't pay much attention to the pedestrians and the priority, understandably, goes to the motorists. People like me are having to deal with ice, slush, and all kinds of yuck. The plows have to dump the snow somewhere, though, and it is usually right where I need to walk. So I have to either find a way around it, or climb over a slippery hill and hope that I don't fall on my behind, or worse, fall and land in the road in front of a car.

I'm also hoping the power won't go off. Or if it does, that it will only be off for a little while. The heat in this apartment is electric, and it will get really cold in here really fast.
